<p>Integrated into the IMEON OS. ONE operating system, the &#8220;Seasonal Cut-off&#8221; is an innovative application developed by IMEON ENERGY and accessible free of charge to owners of an Imeon hybrid inverter.<br />
The DOD settings defines how much of the battery capacity can be discharged before it needs to be recharged. The DOD set to 50% figuratively tells Imeon “do not discharge more than 50% of the battery’s capacity”. The possibility to configure two separate DOD thresholds depending on availability of the grid is important if one requires reserving a certain volume of energy in the battery for backup purposes. In practical example, one can set the “DOD with grid available” to 50% and “DOD with grid unavailable” to 85%, which means that in case of a blackout, the inverter will be able to use at least 15% of the battery’s capacity to supply power to the essential loads, through a dedicated backup output built into each Imeon.<br />
The availability of solar energy is not uniform throughout the year. In northern hemisphere, any solar photovoltaic array will perform better during June and July and will be underperforming during winter months of December and January simply because the days are shorter and the sun’s path across the sky is lower during that time of the year. Since the volume of energy available to replenish the battery varies between seasons it becomes important to assure that the battery is cycled accordingly. Making sure that the battery is fully charged throughout the year requires therefore different DOD settings, depending on the time of the year.<br />

In some countries the price difference between peak-price and off-peak-price electricity is staggering. For example, one of the energy retailers in Australia charges 53 cents for 1 kilowatt-hour of energy used during peak consumption time, while the price drops to 15 cents for 1 kilowatt-hour used during off peak hours. It represents more than a 350% difference. The Charging Controller application allows users to benefit from lower electricity rates and assure that their battery is fully charged for the periods of time when it is needed the most, even when the solar production is not sufficient to completely refill the depleted storage. The application may also be used to assure that the battery is regularly being fully charged during prolonged periods of low solar irradiation such as winter.<br />
Depending on the requirements of the site where the solar systems has been installed and the prices of the local energy provider, the user may wish to configure several periods of time when the charge of the battery using the electricity from the grid will be activated. The periods may be configured with various frequencies, for instance the inverter may be set to charge the battery between 1AM and 2AM daily, and to assure periodic full charge between 1AM and 3AM every week, which will take place every Monday. Once the battery is full the Charging Controller will stop the charging process automatically and the battery will be ready to provide power to the loads.<br />

<p>IMEON ENERGY&#8217;s development teams have designed the BatTime Predictor application to give users information about how long the battery will be able to power the equipped building before it needs to be recharged.</p>
<p>If, at first glance, the principle may seem simple since we all have a battery life indicator on our Smartphone, the calculation is much more complex for a home because its consumption changes constantly as electrical appliances start and stop &#8230;</p>
<p>In order to provide an indication that takes this last point into consideration, the IMEON inverter takes into account data from the &#8220;Forecast Consumption&#8221; application which, thanks to artificial intelligence algorithms, makes a forecast of the building&#8217;s consumption for the next twelve hours.</p>
<p>By cross-referencing the battery state of charge and consumption forecast data, the IMEON inverter is able to provide information about the remaining autonomy.</p>

<p>The lifetime of a battery depends on various factors including the temperature, the depth of discharge as well as charge and discharge currents applied during its operation. It is equally important to keep in mind that the battery bank connected to the inverter needs to be fully recharged on a regular basis.</p>
<p>In order to optimize the overall efficiency of a solar self-consumption system, Imeon inverters only store the excess solar production in the batteries and depending on the time of year, the amount of excess energy may not be sufficient to ensure complete and regular recharge of the batteries. This is when the &#8220;Full Charge&#8221; application operates!</p>
<p>To set up this application, the user will first configure two separate time intervals in the application’s interface, both varying from 1 to 7 days. If the battery does not reach a 100% state of charge within the first programmed time, the Imeon inverter will automatically change the priority of use of the solar production to charge the battery. If after change of priority, the battery has still not reached a 100% State Of Charge within a second time interval set by the user, the Imeon will then initiate a full charge of the batteries by taking power from the public electricity grid.</p>

Having feedback concerning the wear of the battery might incentify the user to adapt the energy consumption patterns and the related use of the battery in order to optimize its lifetime. An example of such pattern modification may be shifting the on-times of certain appliances to peak production periods, in order to have them powered by renewable energy coming directly from the photovoltaic panels rather than from the battery. This application will be particularly useful for lead-acid batteries which require periodic maintenance and support a lower number of cycles than the lithium batteries, or the off-grid sites which require constant power supply since it allows the users to anticipate and plan their battery replacement well in advance.</p>

<p>The South African company Freedom Won was founded in 2011 with the presentation of their first battery prototype designed to transform a thermal car into an electric car (Jeep Grand Cherokee Freedom1).
